Many artists who do not abandon graffiti as a temporary phase of youthful rebellion, but have made it central – name writing – to their now legal work, are reminiscent of the 20th century Expressionists and their self-referential positions. Using the example of Basel graffiti legend Sigi DARE von Koeding, who died at an early age, the author explores whether everything that Expressionism originally represented and still stands for today can be rediscovered in the brightly-coloured, expressive works of one of the best name-writers.
