At the age of 13, John Matos started to follow the older teens from his neighborhood to the train yards, where he immersed himself in painting. After accidentally crashing the computer at his school, Matos adopted the name CRASH, and his tag began to appear on trains circulating throughout New York City.

By 1980 he transitioned from train yards to galleries, curating the groundbreaking Graffiti Art Success for America held in New York at the Fashion MODA art space. The show launched the graffiti movement that has remained active through the present.
