Originally released in 2013 in an edition of twenty-five tapes, Chemtrails’ ‘Treason in the Sky’ was always a bit mysterious. It had a conspiracy poster for cover art, and the brief description accompanying the release only included the names Drew, Luke, Patch and Piers and the note: ‘Recorded under the streaked skies of Lewisham’.
Now, Puff Down presents for the first time on vinyl, an official reissue of the album with a new master by Mikey Young. Recorded in 2013 over the course of a single day by members from The Laurels and East River, ‘Treason is the Sky’ is a paranoid trip of instrumental hip-hop.
Featuring live-recorded drum breaks, synth sounds resembling air raid sirens, subterranean bass throbs, wonky guitar lines and eerie ambience… The beats are far from any ironed out, slick production style… Instead, think of the discordant melodies of early RZA, the crunchy break from Black Moon’s ‘U Da Man’, J-Zone’s live-drum rattles post-2013.Damu the Fudgemunk on a bad trip. Forget about bumping this in your Jeep. These are paranoid, eerie head-nodders for underground bunker dwellers.
Limited to 100 copies. All covers are hand-stamped and the record comes with an 8-page zine featuring interviews with Luke O’Farrell and Patch Free on the making of the album, colour facsimiles of the OG tape. And, a 16x16cm sticker of the original album artwork.
